Industries create scarcity, purpose generates abundance

Industries create scarcity, purpose generates abundance

We are living at a turning point in humanity.

More than ever, people and organizations are becoming impact-driven, shaping the future we live in. In this article, I discuss how businesses have evolved and how impact-driven ecosystems connect communities with abundance to create massive impact.

The Power of Impact

We are all here to create something that did not exist before us. Both individuals and organizations need to give meaning to their existence—doing things that make us feel alive, that make sense, and that contribute to a greater purpose.

As Simon Sinek put it: “The purpose of a company is not to make money. The purpose of a company is to achieve something—to drive a greater cause that benefits society.
Elon Musk reinforced this idea, saying: “Life cannot be about solving problem after problem. There must be a motivation that makes you wake up in the morning, eager to be alive.

My personal purpose is “evolving humanity“, which is why I co-authored the book Massive Transformative Purpose and introduced the MTP Canvas to help individuals and organizations find and activate their purpose.

Impact-Driven Ecosystems

Traditional businesses operate under a scarcity-based model, competing in markets that eventually become red oceans. However, a new model has emerged—organizations connected to abundance—leveraging unlimited resources such as technology, data, and renewable energy.

Some companies go beyond leveraging abundance and transform into Exponential Organizations, scaling their impact globally. For example, Airbnb connects with an abundance of accommodations, making it the largest lodging network in the world without owning a single hotel.

However, some organizations transcend even this—moving past industry limitations to become impact-driven ecosystems. Apple, once a computer company, is now an ecosystem built around the purpose of “empowering creativity and self-expression.” It offers not just computers, but also phones, services, entertainment, and much more, aligning everything under its ecosystem-driven impact strategy.

Impact-driven ecosystems attract communities of people aligned with their purpose, who cease to be mere customers and become active users of the ecosystem.

The Key Elements of Impact-Driven Ecosystems

  • Purpose: The core mission that drives the ecosystem, influencing everything within it.
  • Community: People and organizations aligned with the purpose, working together to make it a reality.
  • Value: The products, services, and experiences that facilitate purpose-driven transformation.

Understanding the Future

When we grasp this new paradigm, we realize why companies like Tesla are valued higher than all of their competitors combined. Tesla is not an automobile company—it is an impact ecosystem with the purpose of “accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy.”

Comparing Tesla to traditional car manufacturers is like comparing BlackBerry to the iPhone. While traditional companies focus on incremental improvements, Tesla is creating an ecosystem of impact-driven products, services, and organizations, all designed to fulfill its mission.

Creating Impact, Together!

One of the most profound effects of impact-driven ecosystems is that their community members hold real power. Instead of competing in scarcity-driven markets, people collaborate across ecosystems that align with their purpose.

Google’s ecosystem, for example, is centered around “organizing the world’s information and making it universally accessible and useful.” It integrates with complementary purpose-driven platforms such as Wikipedia, TED, and Microsoft Office, creating an interconnected network of impact.
